The Story Behind The Song: Setia

“‘Bah collab,’ I commented on one of Icco’s social media posts.
‘Bah bikin,’ he replied.

I got so excited about it! Before the Movement Control Order (MCO) in Malaysia, many musicians in my circle seemed afraid to collaborate because to them, it’s always about the investment of time, money and skills. I believed that collaborations should have been taking place way before now, but better this moment than never.

Within a few minutes, a WhatsApp group was created. Icco, who is now based in KL, contacted some of his friends in Sabah – Nick, Bobbe and Onell. I’ve only met them a couple of times on different occasions, so this was the first time we’d be making music together. We discussed the song choice and thought, ‘Why don’t we do a Malaysian song?’

Icco suggested ‘Setia’ and I offered to work on the song arrangement. Nick, the guitarist, had been busy with other non-music related things before the CMO took place. This collaboration rekindled his love for music as we created music together remotely. He is now inspired to make music again. That, to me, is how collaborations bring out the best in everyone and keep us inspired to keep doing what we love to do.” – Gideon Jute, Kuching-based music director
