Tenom – Growing Up in Tenom

“I’m a true blue, born and bred Tenom girl. During my school days, life here was very much like living in a kampung. When we weren’t at school, we would be at the farm. Back then, we planted all sorts of things like rice, potatoes and bananas. Not the ordinary bananas you find these days, though. We planted pisang berangan (chestnut bananas).

I also grew up drinking coffee. Coffee was a must for breakfast. Sometimes, we would have coffee mixed with cold rice. That was our “fast food”. My parents would head out to the farm very early in the morning. Sometimes, they would be gone by the time I woke up. If there was anything else to eat, I would have it for breakfast. If not, it would be cold rice mixed with coffee. Some would say ‘aiyooooo…’ when they hear that, but that was my routine. Otherwise, it would be boiled cassava with coffee.

I started working at Fatt Choi Coffee in 1993. Now, I work at the factory, overseeing coffee processing. Truly, my whole life is infused with coffee.” – Ayung, Tenom child

Oh coffee! If a Tenom child grows up with coffee around the clock, it must be true that Sabah’s best coffee is found in Tenom. Thank you for your willingness to share your story with us, Ayung.

The Malay Version of this story:

“Saya memang anak Tenom. Pisang dulu, bukan pisang biasa seperti sekarang. Kami tanam pisang berangan.

Saya juga membesar minum kopi. Waktu sarapan pagi, mesti minum kopi.

– Ayung, anak Tenom

Oh kopi! Kalau anak Tenom dah membesar dengan kopi kais pagi kais petang, memang sah kopi terbaik Sabah tersimpan di Tenom. Terima kasih kerana sudi berkongsi cerita bersama kami, Ayung.
