Discovering Pontian: A Kelong Visit
Once upon a time, there was a fisherman who was thrown out of his village. Desperate to be close to his hometown, he built a floating platform on the waters nearby and made it his home. No matter how his village wronged him, he wanted to stay close and protect them. He would keep a look out for them, alerting them of any possible dangers that came from the sea. He became their watchman. If only we have more Malaysians like him – just a fisherman but one who is faithful and in love with the land he was born in.
Kelongs are floating wooden platforms which were primarily built for fishing purposes. But soon, they doubled up as fish farms and homes for many fishermen. Just offshore Kukup, you will be able to visit one and buy their fresh catch.
Discovering Pontian is a series of stories featuring stories from the Pontian district in Johor – places to visit, people to meet and food to feast on. These stories are presented by singer-songwriter Juwita Suwito and author-novelist Gina Yap Lai Yoong.
