“Growing up in a traditional family, it was not an easy path for me to tell my parents that I wanted to be a professional musician. I didn’t blame them as most East-Malaysian parents do not view music as a career option. To them, music is a hobby. But I’ve always believed that I could do something for the music industry – or at least something to elevate the standard and quality of East-Malaysian musicians.
Back then, I didn’t know who to consult with when it came to music matters. I didn’t know of any established East-Malaysian musicians who could guide me. I dived in head first! Thankfully, I soon had the support of my parents, pastors and life mentor. Playing drums for Juwita Suwito and being a part of the Flippin’ Pages also gave me a support system that has shaped the person I am today.
That’s why I am determined to do what I believe I’m called to do today; to be a mentor. I don’t see myself as just a performer, I see myself as an educator, motivator and mentor. I believe the next generation of musicians should be far better than my generation and I will continue to do whatever it takes to make it happen.” – Wagner Daniel, mentor & musician
