“Many people wondered why I decided to return home to Kota Kinabalu upon graduation in 1995. Jobs and opportunities in music seemed to be concentrated in big cities like Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. But my heart has always been with my hometown. Based in Kota Kinabalu, I wanted to find ways to make a living through music. Even though there was no music scene, I saw a lot of potential and felt the calling to do something about it.
It wasn’t easy. Resources were limited and there were many hurdles to overcome. Ironically, building a music scene has little to do with building anything. In fact, it is all about breaking down barriers: social barriers, cultural barriers, economic barriers and most importantly, mental barriers. The key is JUST DO IT. Be determined enough to stay on course, humble enough to accept failures and be patient because it will take time to happen.
Now, 20 years later, I see the beginning of a new era for music in Kota Kinabalu. There are still many more barriers to break down but exciting times await us.” – Roger Wang, musician
